Sam Brown double bassist and educator

As a double bassist, Sam Brown is a performer driven to explore many genres of music. This drive has led him to perform in jazz bands, bluegrass groups, rock bands, tango ensembles, contemporary chamber ensembles, baroque ensembles, and orchestras. These ensembles range from the Cuarteto Latinoamericano to a Baltimore-based bluegrass ensemble named "Branch Alley" to the Santa Fe Symphony. He believes that one cannot express what he or she desires in music without a technical mastery of the instrument, which has led him to attend an intensive four-week music academy named Domaine Forget in Quebec, Canada.
Sam is a passionate and positive teacher who has experience teaching in a variety of settings, including an elementary sectional setting where he taught 3rd, 4th and 5th graders how to play the violin, viola, cello, and the bass, and in both an elementary and middle school orchestral setting where he taught 3rd through 8th graders practicing tools, to listen, and to play together.
Sam's inspiration to find a more efficient and easy way of playing the bass led him to become a AmSAT certified Alexander Technique Teacher. He studied with the incredible Karen DeWig at the Alexander Technique Center of Albuquerque. Sam also wrote his Master's Thesis on how Mindfulness Meditation affects musicians perceptions of their own practicing and music making.
Sam is currently a member of the Santa Fe Symphony, and has performed with the New Mexico Philharmonic, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Quarteto Latinoamericano, and Chatter Albuquerque. Sam's playing has lead him to perform in master classes with Harold Robinson, Paul Ellison, Ali Yazdanfar, Dr. Marco Machado and Nicholas Walker. Sam has also taken double bass lessons with Al Laszlo, David Allen Moore, Scott Dixon, Nicholas Walker, Etienne Lafrance, Paul Ellison, Alex Jacobsen, Miles B. Davis, Craig Brown, Kevin Casseday, and Aaron Robertson. Sam has also taken piano lessons with Lura Johnson.
Sam received his Bachelors of Music in Double Bass Performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University studying with Paul Johnson and Ira Gold. He also completed his Music Ed Certification for grades K-12 from Peabody. He received his Master's in Music Education from the University of New Mexico, writing his thesis on the topic of Mindfulness and Music with the supervision of Dr. Regina Carlow. He attended festivals including Le Domaine Forget, and the University of New Mexico Summer Music Institute. Other major teachers include Al Laszlo, Mark Tatum, Art Sheinberg, Frank Murray, Pat Moulds.
Sam leads a life filled with books, goofy pets, the greatest of friends, a fantastic family, and the most wonderful wife.
